MAC returns with 6-game football season starting Nov. 4

The Mid-American Conference, the first major college football league to postpone its season because of the pandemic, became the final one to jump back in, making it 10 out of 10 conferences that will play in the fall. As university presidents in the Big Ten, Pac-12 and Mountain West have done over the last 10 days, MAC leaders on Friday voted unanimously to reverse their August decision to push football to spring. Just like the other conferences returning to fall ball, the MAC cited advancements in COVID-19 antigen testing as key to the change of direction.

The Latest: Georgia State-Charlotte football game postponed

Georgia State has postponed Saturday's college football game at Charlotte because of the coronavirus. Memphis has cut 19 positions and plans furloughs for all salaried employees making $40,000 starting Oct. 1. Athletic director Laird Veatch says COVID-19 has had a major financial impact on the Tigers' athletics department, leading to a sad day for Memphis athletics that he had hoped would never come.

Notre Dame-Wake Forest postponed; Mountain West eyes fall

As the Atlantic Coast Conference worked Tuesday to reschedule another league game postponed because of a COVID-19 outbreak within one of its teams, the Mountain West was zeroing in on a possible late October start to its football season. No. 7 Notre Dame's game at Wake Forest on Saturday was postponed after positive COVID-19 tests landed 13 Fighting Irish players in isolation and another 10 in quarantine. Mountain West university presidents moved up a scheduled Friday meeting to Thursday, a person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press.

Correction: Virus Outbreak-College Sports story

In a story September 22, 2020, about COVID-19 disruptions in college sports, The Associated Press erroneously reported Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson had previously told AP the conference would not move forward with a fall football season without its schools having the ability to test daily for COVID-19. Thompson told AP the conference would not move forward until it acquired the capacity for its schools to do COVID-19 antigen testing on in athletes.

Dartmouth has role in NFL game involving female coaches, official

The Washington Football Team at the Cleveland Browns will mark the first NFL regular-season game in which a female coach will be on both sidelines while a female officiates the contest, according to Sam Rapoport, the league's senior director of diversity and inclusion. Both coaches - Cleveland's Callie Brownson and Washington's Jennifer King - got their first full-time coaching experience at Dartmouth under coach Buddy Teevens.
