S. Dakota pulls away in 2nd half, beats Southern Miss 84-71

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Trey Burch-Manning scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead South Dakota to an 84-71 victory over Southern Mississippi on Friday night in the Sanford Pentagon Showcase.

Tyler Hagedorn added 16 points and Matt Mooney chipped in 15 for South Dakota (5-1), which has won three straight since a five-point loss to TCU on Nov. 15.

Cortez Edwards scored 18 point for Southern Miss (2-2). Tyree Griffin had 14 points and Anfernee Hampton chipped in 13.

South Dakota took the lead for good three minutes into the second half, and used a 14-2 surge to take a 47-36 advantage with 13:21 to play. Dominic Magee’s 3-pointer pulled Southern Miss to 49-44, but they got no closer. Hagedorn and Mooney each scored 11 points in the second half.

It was the first meeting between the schools.

Missouri State rolls past NAIA Evangel 80-48

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Jarred Dixon made all three of his 3-pointers to score 13 points and Missouri State cruised to an 80-48 win over NAIA cross-town rival Evangel on Friday night.

Obediah Church had his second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds plus five blocks and J.T. Miller and Reggie Scurry had 10 points for the Bears (5-2). Miller, a senior transfer from Howard, surpassed 1,000 points with his first basket.

Missouri State made 17 of 33 shots with 10 different players scoring to take a 42-23 lead at the break. A 20-3 run, capped by Church’s 3-point play, broke it open. Church made it 29-8 with 7:07 to play in the half. By the end 11 players scored for the Bears, who had a 50-29 rebounding advantage.

Freshman Justin Washington led the Crusaders, who shot 32 percent, with 19 points.

UT Arlington uses big run to beat Western Carolina 89-65

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — Johnny Hamilton set career highs with 30 points and 15 rebounds and powered a late run as UT Arlington pulled away with 19 straight points for an 89-65 win over Western Carolina on Friday night.

Hamilton scored 21 for the Mavericks (3-1) during a 26-4 run that was capped with 19 straight to turn a four-point lead into an 86-60 edge with 1:19 left.

UT Arlington had double-digit leads in the first half but allowed the Catamounts to cut the margin to 50-49 early in the second.

Davion Turner and Nathan Hawkins added 11 points and Kevin Hervey scored 10 for the Mavericks, who shot 33 of 60 (55 percent).

Matt Halvorsen had 16 points and Devin Peterson 13 for Western Carolina (1-5). The Catamounts fell behind 13-2 to start the game and never led although they trailed by only four before the Mavericks’ late run.
